JT girls top seed at tourney

The Jim Thorpe girls clinched a berth and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs at the Holy Family Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament in Nazareth.

Thorpe completed its schedule 7-0 after winning two games on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Skyler Searfoss and Leila Hurley each scored 15 points in a 58-36 victory over Minersville. Searfoss also tallied a team-high 11 points in a 33-23 win over Easton.

In a pair of games Wednesday, the “Mauch Chunk Machine” downed Holy Reedemer 45-34 and Central Catholic by a 42-33 score. Hurley netted 10 points against Redeemer, while Olivia Smelas led the way against Central with 17.

Jim Thorpe will play the No. 4 seed (still to be determined) in Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinal game. A win there would put them in the 2:15 p.m. finals.
