West End news for June 23, 2021

Flea market time

Our Lady Queen of Peace opens its doors to the annual flea market at 7 a.m. Friday. The event will be open until 4 p.m.

The hours are the same for Saturday, and on Sunday it continues from 1 p.m. to closing at 5 p.m.

Due to that annual activity there will be no Eucharistic Adoration on Friday and no Community Sunday Supper on Sunday.

OTOH at Raceway

Operation Touch of Home is slated to be at Pocono Raceway for the NASCAR cup series Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The gates open at 2 p.m. Friday. Children’s activities are from 3 to 6 p.m.

Free concert

The Chestnuthill Park, 221 Route 715, Brodheadsville, will host a free summer concert by the band trio Catch 22! on Friday.

The band will play from 6 to 8 p.m. with an intermission and free ice cream. Also, starting at 5 p.m., the food truck Empanada Chicas will be available for food purchases through part of the concert.

Attendees are asked to bring a blanket, chair, bug spray and mask.

The West End Park and Open Space Commission looks forward to kicking off summer with this concert.

Pantry open

The Effort UMC SFRC food pantry will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Church hymn-sing

St. Peter’s UMC, Route 115, Saylorsburg, will feature Winds of Change, including Singspiration, at its 10 a.m. service Sunday.

Funday Sunday

Effort UMC has a Funday Sunday planned for 11 a.m. July 18 with the theme Three Slices.

Those slices are: Slice of Pizza, Slice of Cake and a Slice of the Bible.

It is open to all children from ages 4 years and up. The event will be held outside, weather permitting. Otherwise everyone is to meet in Wesley Hall.

Job opportunity

Eldred Township has a part-time employment opportunity. The township needs someone to do summer road work and property maintenance projects, through Sept. 15.

The individual must have or obtain online flagger certification and must be 18 or older.

Polk supers

The Polk Township Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the township’s municipal building in Kresgeville.

Harvesting started

The Garden of Giving is already helping its various neighbors, according to Linda Zak.

Parsley, kale and chard are already going to local families, along with many dozens of eggs, she said.

She adds that volunteers continue to be essential to the working of The Garden, and are welcome from Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All needed supplies are provided. Contact The Garden of Giving at 570-402-1282 or by email at GardenOfGiving1@gmail.com.

Graduates feted

All Effort UMC graduates, whether high school or a college or university, will be recognized Sunday.

Folks who have submitted names to the church are asked to encourage those young folks to attend.

West End Soccer League 2021 online fall soccer registration is now open and will close on June 30.

Joint carnival set

The four West End fire companies are hosting a joint carnival to benefit them all, beginning next Wednesday through Saturday, at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

It will be a good old-fashioned carnival involving the four volunteer units, including the Kunkletown, West End, Polk Township and Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder.

The carnival will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. each night, and funds will benefit all four.

The event will include fair food and rides for the young ones.

COVID-19 social distancing and safety practices will be in place.

Walking track hours

The Western Pocono Community Library Walking Track has new hours in effect.

Open Monday through Friday, check on the details at westernpoconocommunitylibrary.org.

The WPCL is now accepting vendor applications for the 2021 craft show taking place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 20.

Monday bingo

The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, has announced an open community event, Monday night bingo.

Card sales begin at 6:30 p.m. and the calling at 7 p.m.

The games are slated to be held weekly throughout the year.

There will be food specials.
