JT girls open tourney 3-0

The Jim Thorpe girls basketball went 3-0 Monday on the first day of the highly competitive Holy Family Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament.

The tourney, held in Nazareth, features some of the area’s best girls basketball teams, including Minersville, Easton, Holy Redeemer, Central Catholic, Bangor, Vorhees and Nazareth.

Thorpe opened the competition with victories over Bangor, Nazareth and Vorhees.

Skyler Searfoss scored 13 points as the “Mauch Chunk Machine” posted a 40-26 decision over Bangor. Searfoss and Olivia Smelas both tallied 14 points to help Thorpe edge Nazareth by a 47-43 score.

Smelas then netted a team-high 17 points in a 52-32 win against Vorhees.

Jim Thorpe returns to action today and will meet Minersville and Easton. On Wednesday, it will face Holy Reedemer and Central Catholic.

The tourney’s semifinal and final rounds will take place on Friday.
