A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday on a charge of simple assault, for which he previously entered a guilty plea.
Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Arthur Scott Hanman, 52, of Jim Thorpe, to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison. On a summary offense of public drunkenness, Serfass imposed a fine of $500.
Hanman was charged on June 11, 2020, when Jim Thorpe police responded to the Navigation Building along Broadway for a report of a man attempting to enter an apartment in the building. The resident said Hanman barged into her apartment. She fled and called police.
Defense attorney Paul J. Levy, of the public defender’s office, said Hanman has drug and alcohol issues which he plans to address as soon as Tuesday.
Levy said arrangements have been made to have Hanman enter an inpatient rehabilitation program and a bed is available for him so he can be furloughed from the prison to the facility. If he fails to successfully complete the program he must return to the prison.
In addition to the prison term, Serfass ordered Hanman to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the victim, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, render 100 hours of community service when released from prison/rehab program, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
He was given credit for 33 days already served.
