LVHN names two to executive leadership positions

Lehigh Valley Health Network is welcoming two new members to its executive leadership team.

John Pierro is the health network’s new executive vice president and chief operating officer as of May 31.

Liv Vesely will serve as LVHN’s new senior vice president and chief philanthropy officer, beginning June 7.

“During our national search, we looked for health care leaders with the knowledge to further the work we have been doing to give people convenient access to care, an unsurpassed experience when they are at LVHN, and health care value,” said Brian A. Nester, DO, MBA, president and Chief Executive Officer of LVHN. “John and Liv have that skill set, and their personal values perfectly align with our health network’s values. We are excited to welcome them to the LVHN family.”

Pierro comes to LVHN from Steward Health Care System, an $8 billion health care network with 35 hospitals in 10 states. He served as regional chief operating officer of the organization’s north division, which includes two academic medical centers and 10 community hospitals, 2,800 beds and more than 14,000 employees. Pierro co-led a multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses that established regional services/systems of care, achieved the Leapfrog No. 1 hospital in the state for patient experience, national recognition for two hospitals as Leapfrog “Top 100 Hospitals,” and national recognition for three hospitals as Leapfrog “Top Hospitals” for three consecutive years.

During his 25-year career, he served in the cabinet of two New Jersey governors, completed more than $2 billion in design and construction projects, acquired and integrated three community hospitals, led market growth, the recruitment of more than 500 new primary care providers, specialists and surgeons, and expanded ambulatory services by opening more than 100 new physician practices and urgent care centers.

At LVHN, Pierro will oversee operations at the health network’s hospitals and ambulatory locations, and lead the facilities and construction team. He will help develop and lead the creation and execution of LVHN’s goals, objectives, plans and policies.

Pierro is a graduate of Bloomsburg University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in economics and finance. He studied health care and population health at Princeton University/Woodrow Wilson School and earned his MBA at The Johns Hopkins University.

Vesely comes to LVHN from Jupiter Medical Center Foundation in Florida, where she served as president and chief advancement officer. During her tenure, she developed a $300 million comprehensive campaign strategy and operational development plan to support the long-term strategic vision for the medical center, securing more than $230 million in five years.

At LVHN, Vesely will design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy and expand LVHN’s philanthropic efforts, establishing strong relationships with community members and partner organizations in all the regions LVHN serves.

Prior to her time with Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, Vesely gained extensive experience as deputy chief development officer at Mount Sinai Health System in New York, vice president of development at Western Connecticut Health Network Foundation, and director of annual giving and development at Columbia University Medical Center.

Vesely holds a Master of Public Health, Executive Health Care Management and Administration from Columbia University, a Master of Arts, Latin American Studies from New York University, a U.K. Master of Arts, International Relations from University of Kent, and a Bachelor of Arts, International Relations and Spanish from Syracuse University.
