Schellhamer will play at Vermont

Last year was a landmark one for the Northwestern Lehigh girls field hockey team as the Tigers claimed their first Colonial League title in 18 years.

One girl who played a huge role in the championship season parlayed that success into a scholarship offer from the University of Vermont.

Lauren Schellhamer formally announced she’ll become a Catamount during Northwestern’s annual college commitment ceremony held June 1 at Tiger Stadium.

“I just loved the coaches and the girls, and they were very supportive and welcoming,” Schellhamer said. “They have a great biology program and science program. I chose a path in the medical field, and I feel confident going in that it’s going to set me up for my future.”

In addition to helping the Tigers secure the league title, Schellhamer was a significant factor in the Tigers’ second straight District 11 A title.

She was Northwestern’s leading scorer during the season, as her scoring prowess was a by-product of a great work ethic away from the ball.

By doing the blue collar work, Schellhamer set up scoring chances for herself and teammates.

“I just love playing with my teammates, and the teamwork involved in the game,” said Schellhamer. “I love celebrating wins with them on and off the field. We’re all like a family. It’s amazing.”

Throughout her outstanding high school career, Schellhamer earned several individual accolades, including a Pennsylvania High School Field Hockey Coaches Association All-State First Team selection. Schellhamer also received the 2020 Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Field Hockey Player of the Year honor.

Schellhamer played several positions during her Tiger career. As a freshman, she played right midfielder. During her sophomore and junior seasons, Schellhamer was a high center midfielder - a more offensive position. For her senior campaign, she was a low center midfielder - a more defensive position.

Despite the move into a more defensive-minded position, Schellhamer excelled offensively with 14 goals and 17 assists this past season.

“Winning the Colonial League championship, and the past few years playing in districts, have been memorable,” Schellhamer said. “Over the years, we really just learned how to work together very well and just be a family.”
