Baer Memorial Swimming Pool to open on Memorial Day

It may be a few days later than normal, but Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton will still open on Memorial Day weekend.

Borough recreation director Tom Evans said that rather than open on Saturday, the decision was made to push back the opening until Monday.

“Due to the weather this weekend,” Evans said, adding that the pool will open at noon on Memorial Day, and will be open daily from that point, weather permitting.

Evans said the pool is open to Carbon County residents only, and that he plans to keep the capacity at 75%.

The pool has the capacity to accommodate 600 people, so he will look to keep attendance at about 450.

Evans said the plan is to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols, and to keep numbers low in the restrooms and at the concession stand.

He said pool passes are for sale, and that daily admission is $7 for adults, and $5 for children.

Evans said swim lessons will start at 6:30 p.m. June 14, with morning sessions starting at 10:30 a.m. June 24.

He said those interested in swim lessons may register at the pool.

Evans noted that a new 30-by-30-foot pavilion at the pool is expected to be ready by the end of June.

Similar to the existing 21-by-30-foot pavilion, the new, larger pavilion is a joint effort between the Lehighton Area Pool Pals and the borough.

The borough will handle the installation of the concrete pad and supplying electric to the pavilion. The Pool Pals will cover the cost of the remaining structure.

Evans said the pool offers a refreshing respite from the COVID-19 virus.

“Everybody can’t wait to get out and enjoy themselves,” he said. “It’s been a long winter for everybody.”
