Man who crashed stolen pickup flown from scene of fiery crash

A man was flown to an area trauma center after he crashed a stolen pickup and the truck caught on fire Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when reports poured into the Carbon County communication center of an erratic driver descending the Mansion House into Jim Thorpe, passing on a double yellow line.

The driver continued through Jim Thorpe out onto Lentz Trail.

As he entered Summit Hill on East White Bear Drive he lost control, striking a car then crossing the roadway down an embankment and hitting a tree head-on.

The truck, stolen from Lehighton, burst into flames with two passers-by pulling him from the burning wreckage. The victim was treated at the scene by Lehighton paramedics before being flown to a Lehigh Valley trauma center.

Summit Hill police are investigating the incident.

Responding were the Summit Hill and Jim Thorpe fire companies. Area fire police maintained traffic control at the scene, shutting down the roadway.
