Franklin to consider fire tax for fire department

Franklin Township could eventually create a fire tax to help raise funds for its fire department.

Supervisor Robin Cressley broached the idea at Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting.

Cressley noted that the board did budget $40,000 for the fire company this year.

Additionally, the township also pays for the fire company’s gas and diesel fuel; workers’ compensation premium; and auto and liability insurance.

“It’s not enough for what they need,” Cressley said. “We’ve been blessed with you guys.”

Cressley added he’d like to see the board give his idea some serious thought.

Fire Chief Lynn Diehl told the board right now the fire company is looking into a truck.

Diehl said the cost for the firetruck would likely be somewhere between $800,000 and $850,000.

He said it would replace a firetruck that is 31 years old.

Cressley said he believes they should all get together and see if they’re on the same page.

He said the plan would be to try to get something in place by the end of the year.
