State police investigating unemployment fraud

State police at Fern Ridge reported troopers are investigating 14 unemployment fraud cases in which the victim’s personal information, including name, birth date, Social Security number and financial information, was compromised.

The police public information release report lists Parkside Avenue in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County, as the location for the fraud.

The victims, whose names were not released, resided at various location in Pennsylvania including Philadelphia, Leola, Chambersburg, Levittown, Lebanon, Somerset, Meyersdale, Boswell, Ellwood City, Ford Cliff, Ford City, Templeton, Kittanning and an unnamed state location. The victim’s included both men and women.

Troopers did not release any other details concerning the investigations.

In unrelated fraud investigations troopers reported a 62-year-old Saylorsburg, Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, woman was contacted by phone by an unknown man representing himself as a federal agent. He told the victim she was associated with a money laundering investigation. He told her a vehicle was found near the Mexican border connected to her and she needed to provide proof that the vehicle was not associated with her. Troopers said it was a impersonate public servant investigation.

Troopers also reported that an unknown person obtained the personal information of a 70-year-old man from Albrightsville, Penn Forest Township, Carbon County, and attempted to apply for a credit card in his name. The victim notified the bank involved that he did not apply for the card.
