Carbon to modify D&L Trail connector project

Carbon County is making some modifications to a trail connector project through the county parking lot in Jim Thorpe.

On Thursday, the commissioners said that as the D&L Trail connector project was being completed, they realized that some areas were not wide enough for multiple hikers or bikers.

Because of this, the board has altered the plans to widen some portions of the new connector and make it safer for all who use it.

“There were certain things we didn’t like,” Commissioner Rocky Ahner said. “We had to delay it a little but when we reviewed it, we wanted to make it right.”

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that when the plans were completed and guard rails installed, the county realized how narrow some places along the trail had become.

“We’re going to lose some parking spaces over it but it is totally unacceptable the way it is right now,” he said. “We are going to make some changes and make it wide enough and safe enough for everyone.”

Modifications by the construction company are expected to begin on May 24 and will take a few days to complete. The final completion date is by July 4, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said.

The connector project began in early April.

J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen was awarded the contract for the project at a cost of $321,718.50, which will be covered under the Transportation Set Aside Grant.
