Tigers’ Yost wins two golds

BANGOR – Faith Yost wasn’t sure where she stood with the hurdles at the beginning of the season.

Her position was clear after the Colonial League Track and Field Championships.

The Northwestern sophomore raced to victories in the 100 and 300 hurdles on Tuesday at Bangor as the top seed in both events.

After running the fastest time in the prelims, Yost crossed the line in 16.32 to claim gold in the 100 final.

She followed that performance with a victory in the 300s, running a 49.17.

“At the beginning of the season, I knew I was going to be in hurdles, but I didn’t think I was going to have hurdles as a main event,” said Yost. “I started getting into it, and I started getting faster and I started getting more confident in my steps and form, and I surprised myself in the beginning of the season because I didn’t think I was going to be up there.

“I kept working at it and kept putting in the effort, and I’m glad I’m where I am.”

Her time in the 100s was just off her seed time of 16.2.

“I feel like I executed the race I wanted to,” she said. “I’m really happy with my time, I’m really happy with how far I’ve come this season despite not having last season. It means a lot to me; I’ve put in a lot of work.

“I have had some injuries throughout the season, so being here today and being able to compete, I’m really happy with that.”

Yost has continued to progress throughout the season. After running times around 16.9 and 16.7 in the middle of the year, she hit 16.2 in the 100s near the end of the season.

In the 300s, she was seeded first with a time of 48.9.

“In the 300, you have more distance and middle distance,” Yost said. “The 100 is about my form, coming out of the blocks and finishing strong.”

She was also seventh in the high jump, and ran the 1600 relay for the first time this season, helping the Tigers finish third.

“You have to stay positive,” she said. “If one race doesn’t go how you want it to, you have to move on and work on the next one and stay positive and push through. I’m overall happy with how hurdles went today.”

Palmerton’s Jonathan Perloni and Northern Lehigh’s Hailey Evans also struck gold on Monday.

Perloni won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.06, while Evans threw a personal best 102-10 to win the discus.

The top seed in the event, Perloni savored the opportunity to stand on top of the podium.

“Coming into leagues, as a freshman and sophomore, I never made it past the prelims,” said Perloni. “So I just wanted to make it into the finals and see how it would turn out. Being able to win it meant a lot to me.”

Perloni ran a 16.88, the second fastest time in prelims.

“I didn’t run my best time in the prelims … so being able to come back in the finals and run the better time was great,” said Perloni, who was seeded first with a time of 15.5. “I’ve had a long season to work on all of that.

“We always work on getting our rhythm down. Just on Saturday, we were working on speed to the first hurdle, and then getting the rhythm down. At the first one, you want to be as fast as you can be, and then get into a rhythm and be smooth throughout the rest of the race.”

Perloni was also third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.5.

Now, Perloni will look ahead to next week’s district meet where he will once again be among the top contenders for gold.

“I want to win districts,” Perloni said. “If I’m able to do that, and be able to advance to another stage I never thought I’d be able to at states after being peer pressured freshman year to do track, would just be awesome because I never thought I’d be able to get that far.”

Evans was seeded third in the discus with a mark of 97-8.5, but continued what has been a steady progression in the event to land on the top step on the podium.

“The last meet (of the season) I PR’d and I thought I was building up again,” said Evans. “I was hoping I would PR again since I had all of that momentum.”

Evans was also sixth in the javelin, and second in the shot put. Her recent work in the discus paid dividends.

“I knew I was down a little, but I kept practicing the spin, trying to get it right,” said Evans. “And I hit one, so it feels pretty good.

“I think what was different today was that I spent a lot of time working on discus because I knew I wasn’t as good in it. I just got a good release this time.”

Evans, a senior, has quickly made up for lost time after last season was canceled, and looks to be peaking at just the right time.

“I tried to control my nerves,” said Evans. “I wasn’t that nervous; I just wanted to come out here and do what I could.

“With not having a season last year, I think I did pretty well to get caught up from what I missed before.”

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS … After sweeping the regular season dual meet titles, Southern Lehigh’s boys and girls also captured the team championships on Tuesday.

OUT OF ACTION … Northwestern’s Rhys George, who was the top seed in the pole vault at 12-9, did not compete Tuesday but should be back for next week’s district meet. “He had an injury over the weekend,” said Tigers head coach Chuck Groller. “He is a gymnast and made it for nationals in Florida the latter part of this week. He was devastated he couldn’t participate today; he has rips on his hands, which is from the rings and he didn’t think he would be able to pole vault today, but is looking forward to next week and hopefully he can do the things that he wants to do and achieve his goal.”
