ACS set for deck party, golf tournament in May

The American Cancer Society continues its fundraising season with two new events this month.

Mountain Valley Golf Course in Barnesville will host a deck party on May 21 and a golf tournament on May 22 on behalf of the American Cancer Society.

Doug Yasinsky, of Tamaqua, has been an integral ACS volunteer in orchestrating both events. He reached out to Joe Krushinsky, chairman of the local ACS telethon, earlier this year to get involved.

“My mother is a two-time survivor, 17 years apart,” Yasinsky said. “God bless her, she is still with us at 87. It proves that the research that’s being done works. So many more people are surviving now that wouldn’t have 30 or 40 years ago.

“But my sister passed two years ago. There is still a lot of work to be done.”

Tickets for the “Fight Cancer Deck Party” on May 21 are $10. Doors open at 6 p.m. and The Strawberry Jam Duo will be performing from 7-10 p.m. All proceeds go directly to the ACS.

“I wanted to do a fundraiser, but I didn’t want to step on anybody’s toes and do what they’re doing,” Yasinsky said. “Their organization (ACS) is 100% volunteer. Nobody is collecting salary. All of the money raised goes directly to the American Cancer Society, which I like.”

The “Fight Cancer 4-Person Scramble” is a 1 p.m. shotgun start on May 22.

Cost is $100 per person or $400 per team. Registration deadline is May 8. A dinner and chances for prizes are included.

“Years ago, I used to run golf tournaments to raise money for various organizations from the Special Olympics and other groups. I have some close friends that are involved,” Yasinsky said.

“We’re shooting for 27 teams and I think I got commitments for 21 already.”

The local Comfort Inn & Suites in Barnesville is offering discounted rooms during days of both events. Yasinsky said a shuttle to and from both will be provided from the hotel.

“If you enjoy yourself, you don’t have to worry about driving,” Yasinsky said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone. People are ready to get outdoors again. What a better place to get out and have some fun with friends and support a great cause.”
