Rundown property is a safety concern in Summit Hill

It’s not the first time the issue of the deteriorating home was brought to Summit Hill Borough Council this week. And the council is still indecisive on what to do about it.

Kira Steber, secretary-treasurer for the borough, said the property at 217 W. White St. has “now become a safety issue.”

Council was told that the borough “doesn’t know who owns the property,” but the taxes are being paid.

Discussion on the property was brought up a year or two ago when pictures of the site were presented to the council showing siding coming off the side of the house, a rear building falling apart and other indications of serious deterioration.

“Part of the house is ready to fall,” Steber said.

Regarding taxes being paid, Councilman David Wargo asked, “What idiot in their right mind would pay taxes on property they don’t want?”

Council member Michael Alabovitz said he doesn’t feel taxpayers should pay for the demolition.

When it was mentioned that the property owner may have passed away and that family members might be paying the taxes, Alabovitz suggested going after the estate.

Alabovitz said the problem has existed for five years, adding, “We need to do something at this point.”

The property was condemned by the borough on April 2, 2019.

Alabovitz suggested that possibly a lien could be attached and executed, and then sold to someone who would tear it down.

No official action was taken.
