Zoscin earns All-State honors

It’s hard to outwork someone who wants it as bad as Scotty Zoscin.

Just ask Weatherly head coach Corey Gerhart.

“I can remember one day coming to practice an hour early to do some paperwork and he’s on the machine, and he’s got 700 shots up already,” said Gerhart.

That’s the type of dedication that has helped Zoscin score 1,000 career points and lead the Wreckers back to the District 11 playoffs this past season.

It’s also the type of drive that has helped the senior close out his career with one more achievement.

Zoscin was selected to the PA Sports Writers All-State Boys Basketball Team, earning Second Team honors in Class 1A.

“Kids like Scotty are far and few between,” said Gerhart. “For the four years that I’ve had him, it’s been amazing.

“He’s a great kid, his work ethic is unbelievable. People don’t realize the amount of time he puts in on and off the floor.”

His desire has been evident in his play throughout his career.

This past season, the Wreckers finished 15-8 and battled Notre Dame East Stroudsburg in the semifinals of the District 11 Class 1A tournament.

It was the program’s third double digit win total in the last four years.

Statistically, Zoscin has just gotten better over that time.

He averaged 18.3 ppg. as a sophomore, 17.6 ppg. as a junior and 19.2 ppg. this past season. Zoscin will depart the Weatherly program with 1,526 career points, which ranks third on the boys’ all-time list.

Zoscin helped elevate and involve those around him, leading to more team success.

“He was a great motivator for the other kids,” said Gerhart. “He has always been about we, not me.”

In addition to his overall scoring, Zoscin also made 61 threes this season, and finished with 197 career three-point field goals.

But the setbacks still sting.

“He gets down on himself. The Notre Dame game he had eight rebounds and 12 points, but to him, that was sub-par,” Gerhart said of the 66-61 loss in the district semifinals, “He got down on himself in those games where he felt like he could have done better, but he doesn’t have anything to hang his head about.

“He showed great leadership on the floor and was a great kid to coach.”

Zoscin was also part of a historic season with the cross country team in the fall. The Wreckers won their first District 11 Class A title and qualified for states after going 13-0 in the regular season in Division 2 of the Schuylkill League. They also won the league meet title.

Scotty also joins sister Emily, who was a three-time all-state selection and 1,000-point scorer (1,703) during her accomplished career at Weatherly.

“Sometimes you have one kid,” said Gerhart, “but how about being in a family where you have a brother and sister accomplish what they did.”

Scotty will leave big shoes to fill.

But his relentless work ethic and passion for the game have also laid the blueprint for what it takes to succeed.
