Local Roundup: Results from April 22

Jim Thorpe rallied for a win over Pine Grove on Thursday, while Tamaqua downed Lehighton.

The Weatherly softball team also picked up a victory, defeating Schuylkill Haven.

BASEBALL

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

A late surge lifted Jim Thorpe to a 7-6 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

The Olympians trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, but scored twice in the frame and then added four more in the sixth to take the lead.

Ian Hubbard’s two-run triple accounted for JT’s scoring in the fifth, and his two-run single in the sixth put his team ahead.

The winners also received two hits and three runs from Caiden Hurley, while Drew Wimmer added a pair of hits and two runs. Michael Cadogan-Dougherty went the distance on the mound to earn the win.

Thorpe evened its overall record to 6-6, and its league mark at 3-3.

Lehighton-Tamaqua

Tamaqua raced to an early lead and coasted to a 13-2 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Aaron Coccio had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for the Blue Raiders, who scored six times in the first inning and added four more in the second. Lucas Schickram added a pair of hits, one a double, scored three times and knocked in a pair.

Tamaqua (2-7; 1-5) also received two hits and three RBIs from Thomas Case. Wyatt Steigerwalt allowed five hits in five innings to earn his first varsity mound win.

For the Indians, who dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the league, Dylan Bowman had two hits, one a double.

Williams Valley-Marian

Williams Valley’s offense was in high gear as the Vikings routed Marian, 19-2, in a Schuylkill League contest.

Zak Underkoffler led an 18-hit attack with three hits, including a grand slam. He scored three runs and knocked in five.

The winners also received three hits, two of them doubles, and three runs scored from Mason Evans.

For the Colts, now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league, Dante Agosti hit a solo homer and Brian Hinkle added a hit and a run scored.

Tri-Valley-Panther Valley

Tri-Valley snapped a tie game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, and then hung on to gain a 7-6 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

The Bulldogs received RBI singles from Devin Wertz and Brody Smith to gain the lead. PV rallied in the home seventh, cutting the gap to one on Stephen Hood’s run-scoring hit and loading the bases with two outs, but Tri-Valley got a ground out to end the game.

Mike Pascoe had three hits, one a home run, scored twice and had two RBIs for the Panthers (9-2; 4-1). Derek Pavlik added a pair of hits and two runs.

Schuylkill Haven scored 17 runs in the second inning en route to a 20-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Jacob Houtz hit a grand slam for the Hurricanes, and also picked up the win by throwing two hitless innings, striking out five.

The winners also received four RBIs from Owen Umbenhaur, while Cole Canfield added two hits and two RBIs.

The Wreckers dropped to 1-8 overall, and 0-6 in the league.

SOFTBALL

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Pine Grove slugged a pair of home runs and cruised to an 18-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Cardinals’ Megan Wolfe and Bailley Dorson both went deep in the three-inning contest.

Wolfe finished with four hits and four RBIs, while Makenzie Daubert added two hits and knocked in three runs.

Nadya Soliman, Amanda Goodchild and Taylor Mordount all had hits for the Olympians (3-7; 2-4).

Williams Valley handed Marian its first loss of the season, rolling to a 11-0 Schuylkill League victory.

Emma Crisswell pitched a five-hitter, striking out nine for the undefeated Vikings. Crisswell also collected two hits and knocked in five runs.

The Fillies (6-1; 4-1) were paced by Mia Nemeth’s two hits.

Tri-Valley rolled to a 16-0 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

The Bulldogs’ Sydney Schley pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out five.

Brittney Rice had three hits, including a homer, and knocked in seven runs for the winners.

PV’s hit, a double, came off the bat of Brenna Beshock.

The loss dropped PV to 0-9 overall, and 0-6 in the league.

Weatherly jumped out to an early lead, and then hung on to post an 11-9 Schuylkill League victory over Schuylkill Haven.

Amanda Colecio had two hits and knocked in three runs for the Wreckers, who built a 7-0 advantage after the first two innings.

Marissa Hoffman contributed a pair of hits, one a double, while Ashley James also finished with two hits and Alexis Colecio added a triple.

The win lifts Weatherly to 7-3 overall, and 4-2 in the league.

Pottsville swept doubles play to gain a 3-2 victory over Lehighton.

The Indians received a win at No. 1 singles as Aaron Miller cruised in straight sets.

The loss dropped Lehighton to 3-8.
