Thorpe fire stations need repairs

Two fire stations in Jim Thorpe are in need of repair, borough officials said last week.

Councilman Jay Miller said wood around the bay window at the Diligent Fire Company No. 3 is starting to deteriorate.

“It’s going to be specialized work when it is performed because we are talking about bending wood, steaming it to make it conform to the bay window,” Miller said. “We really need a carpenter who knows what they’re doing. The borough currently has a grant application out for the repairs, as well as work on the floor of the fire station on the east side.”

Issues with the floor at the east side station, Miller said, have been going on for years.

“That building was put up in the early ’70s,” he said.

Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said the borough is waiting for the Commonwealth Financing Authority to meet regarding the grant application for $32,850.

“We were hoping to hear during the last quarter of last year, but that hasn’t been the case,” Sterner said.

Miller said there is also about a 2-inch gap underneath the roof where rain is getting through, potentially causing damage. The fire company received a quote of $8,000 for the wood work at Diligent, but Miller said he was unsure if that number was still good. Councilman Kyle Sheckler recommended getting an updated quote from Jamison Woodcraft.

“Eventually we’re going to have big issues, so the sooner we get in there and get something done, the better,” he said. “I don’t want us to forget about it and one day we have a real bad situation.”

The gap allowed bees to get in the fire house last year and Miller said that won’t be the biggest problem if it is not addressed.

“You can’t just rap a couple two-by-fours together,” he said. “It’s going to need some love and care.”

Borough officials said when the project gets going, scaffolding may need to be moved on site.

“That means we’ll have to move the equipment somewhere, but that is a secondary concern right now,” Miller said.

Jim Thorpe is projected to receive $460,428 in federal stimulus money from the most recent package, but borough officials don’t know when that will arrive and it’s unlikely that could be used for this project. The stimulus money, Sterner said, can be used for projects dealing with water, wastewater and broadband infrastructure, for example, but there are limitations.

“If we do have that money coming in, maybe we can direct that toward some of our water main projects that we currently have earmarked for Community Block Grant Development funds,” Sterner said. “That would free up some CDBG money, but everything is dependent on timing. If we reallocate CDBG money that has to go back to the state for approval.”
