Details released in I-81 fiery crash

State Police at Frackville have released the details of the 9:05 a.m. crash on Interstate 81 Monday in Foster Township.

The right lane was partially closed on the shoulder of mile marker 113.5 because a disabled tractor-trailer. A service truck was parked on the right shoulder to change a left front flat tire. Safety triangles were in place.

Mark Hoy, of Pottsville, the service truck driver, had finished and was getting ready to leave.

A tractor- trailer, which was not involved in the incident, slowed in the right lane.

A Cascadia 2021 Freightliner driven by Marc McDonough, 66, of Dundalk, Maryland, coming behind the truck, was unable to slow enough, swerving right and into the rear of disabled tractor- trailer driven by Andre Johnson, 40, of College Station, Texas.

McDonough’s fuel tank exploded, igniting both his and Johnson’s vehicles, which completely burned.

Johnson’s vehicle was pushed forward from impact, causing it to strike Hoy, who was thrown about 25 feet. He suffered a head injury and was taken by Minersville ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-East Norwegian Street and released, Mike Peckman, director of public affairs and marketing for LVH-Schuylkill said Thursday.

McDonough had injuries but was able to exit the vehicle. He was taken by Schuylkill EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital- East Norwegian Street.

Johnson was not injured.

I-81 northbound was shutdown at exit 112 to 7 p.m. Monday. Traffic was rerouted.

McDonough was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.
