Protest planned at Schuylkill courthouse
A second protest calling for the resignation of Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage Jr. is planned at the Schuylkill County Courthouse at noon Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Schuylkill County Democratic Women’s League and the Schuylkill County Young Democrats.
A post on the Schuylkill County Democratic Women’s League Facebook page says April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
“Sexual assault and harassment are not partisan issues - and this even is not a partisan event. Democrats, Independents and Republicans must all stand together to take back our courthouse.”
The post says they will advocate for the resignation of Halcovage or his impeachment.
Halcovage has been sued in federal court for alleged sexual harassment of four female county employees. Other defendants are also named in the lawsuit.
The county’s solicitor’s office and human resources offices investigated the allegations and determined that Halcovage violated three county policies: sexual harassment, conduct and discipline, and physical and verbal abuse. The investigation determined that if Halcovage was an employee he would be suspended and recommended for termination.
Neither county administration nor other county commissioners can discipline another commissioner or remove him from office absent criminal conviction or impeachment.
The state Attorney General’s office decided not to file charges against Halcovage, citing statute of limitations. The office was tasked with determining if Halcovage should face criminal charges for his alleged harassment of female county employees.
Numerous county officials, including Commissioners Gary Hess and Barron “Boots” Hetherington have called for Halcovage to resign. He has denied the allegations against him.
