NY men flee police, injured in Monroe rollover

Two men from New York were injured in a rollover when they fled state police from a traffic stop on Interstate 80 westbound in Pocono Township, Monroe County.

State police at the Stroudsburg barracks said Nicholas Neville, 31, and Merritt Fletcher, 30, both of Auburn, were taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg.

Police said at 6:23 p.m. Wednesday Trooper Christopher Gaetano stopped a 2021 Toyota Rav4. The two men got out of the car, and the trooper began a consent search of the vehicle. He called for backup and Neville and Fletcher returned to the vehicle and fled.

Gaetano followed. Police said they threw large quantities of suspected illegal controlled substances from the vehicle, some of which were recovered.

The pursuit continued despite spike strip attempts by state police from the Fern Ridge barracks, until the runaway vehicle was slowed behind a box truck. Police said due to the slowed speed, Trooper Gaetano was able to utilize a PIT maneuver. The runaway vehicle traveled off the highway and rolled multiple times. Neville and Fletcher were taken into custody, followed by the medical transport.

Police said they are facing criminal charges that were approved by the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
