Local roundup: Results from April 7

The Panther Valley boys and girls track and field teams earned victories against Schuylkill Haven on Wednesday.

Northwestern earned a pair of wins in baseball and softball action.

The Palmerton and Northern Lehigh softball teams, along with the Jim Thorpe tennis squad, were also victorious.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sch. Haven-Panther Valley

Panther Valley swept Schuylkill Haven in a Schuylkill League meet.

The Panthers posted a 74-48 victory in the boys’ contest, and an 87-40 win in the girls’ competition.

Gabiel DeMatto (110H, 300H), Thomas Kokinda (high jump, long jump) and Seth Berk (shot put, discus) all had multiple wins in the boys’ meet.

On the girls’ side, Hailey Shreffler won three events, placing first in the (800, 1600 and triple jump for the Panthers. Aneila McLeod (200, long jump) and Jacqueline Kokinda (discus, javelin) also posted multiple event victories.

BASEBALL

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

A big fourth inning, combined a dominant performance from Carter Welch on the mound, helped Northwestern roll to a 10-0 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Welch tossed five innings of shutout ball for the Tigers (4-0 overall; 4-0 CL), in which he only surrendered three hits and recorded five strikeouts.

The Tigers’ Ryan Kensinger finished with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, in which he recorded three singles and four RBIs, while Justin Augustus followed with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.

Welch helped himself at the plate with two singles, three runs scored and two walks, while Dylan Witkowski and Randall Zack both added multiple hits.

Palmerton-Moravian Acad.

A 13-run opening inning fueled Palmerton to a 22-0 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

With a comfortable lead from his offense, the Bombers’ pitcher Chase Reph pitched three innings of no-hit ball, in which he finished with three strikeouts.

Bombers’ leadoff hitter Ethan Recker led the way with four runs scored, three singles, two RBIs, and a walk; while Brock Bollinger provided the punch with a double, triple, two runs scored, two walks and six RBIs.

Kaleb Either added multiple hits with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Palmerton evens out at 2-2 overall (2-1 CL) on the season.

Catasauqua knocked off Northern Lehigh for a 15-1 Colonial League win.

The Roughies scored five opening-inning runs, while adding six more in the third to pull away from the Bulldogs.

H. Reitz sparked the Roughies with two singles, a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs, while J. Pushkar added two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

N. Buskirk was the Bulldogs (0-5 overall; 0-4 CL) lone multiple hitter with two singles and a walk, while Ryan Hammond scored the lone run.

Jordan Hemingway’s perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate highlighted Northern Lehigh’s 9-4 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Hemingway paced the Bulldogs (1-3 overall; 1-3 CL) with three singles, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk, while Haylie Fenstermaker (two singles, run scored) and Julia Wanamaker (two singles, a run scored, RBI) both contributed multiple hits.

Emma Smith chipped in with two runs scored.

Marissa Christman delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Northwestern to a 7-6 Colonial League win over Southern Lehigh.

After digging themselves out of an early 5-1 deficit, the Tigers knotted things up in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Sage Toman crossed home plate on Christman’s sacrifice to win it.

Brynn Balliet sparked the Tigers (5-0 overall; 4-0 CL) with two solo home runs – one in the opening inning and then another in the fifth.

Toman plated two runs scored, while Olivia Stofflet added two RBIs for the locals.

TENNIS

Pen Argyl-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe came out victorious on the courts with a 4-1 victory over Pen Argyl.

The Olympians’ doubles tandems of Michael Carroll and Sam Seachrest and Haven Johnson and Tanner Lux helped seal the deal with a sweep of doubles’ play.

Jim Thorpe improves to 6-2 overall on the season.
