New York man pleads to DUI before trial

A New York City man pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on Monday, on the day he was scheduled to face a Carbon County jury.

Jose Deleon, 38, entered his plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to the charge. He was arrested on Feb. 8, 2017, along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.

State police at Fern Ridge stopped Deleon, who was operating a Ford Econoline van for tinted windows. He was found to be impaired and submitted to a blood draw which showed the presence of a controlled substance.

Deleon’s plea was entered via Zoom from his home in New York. A jury panel had been called to hear his case but he changed his mind and entered the plea.

Nanovic deferred sentencing as Deleon must obtain a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation.

He faces a mandatory minimum of 90 days in jail on the charge.
