Towamensing to open new recycling center

Towamensing Township’s recycling center is on track to open in the summer.

“Hopefully this summer, we’ll get our recycling going,” Supervisors Chairman Guy Seifert said Thursday night.

The township has its current recycling station, along with a new station that is being constructed behind the building.

After the meeting, Supervisor John Kleintop said the recycling center isn’t open yet, but is nearing completion.

Kleintop added that once complete, the facility will be locked up and the recycling center will be on the outside of the facility.

“We feel it’s the right thing to do environmentally,” Kleintop said. “Currently, because the compound is open, individuals take advantage of the township’s good nature, and they dump off all kinds of things that are not recycling.”

Kleintop said those who attempt to dump waste at both the current recycling station and the new one may want to rethink their strategy.

“We will police this with a brand-new camera system so that we will be able to see detail of the car, detail of the license plate, and detail of the individual,” he said. “State police will be really helpful when individuals are dropping things off.”
