Lehighton Eyeland Optical moves over the bridge, expands

Eyeland Optical Centers has moved to a bigger location at 175 Interchange Road in Lehighton.

District Manager Dawn Macurak said patients can expect the same personal care for glasses and eye exams that they’ve come to know and expect for the past few decades.

The business opened at its new site last month, moving from the NAPA building along Route 443 in Mahoning Township.

Macurak explained the decision behind the move.

“There’s a lot of construction going on over there (Mahoning Township),” Macurak said. “This is a bigger location, and this building had a better layout.”

Macurak said the move has experienced a “seamless transition” for the most part.

“The patients are really excited about the layout,” Macurak said. “There’s been just a lot of good feedback.”

Macurak said the business is more than just your typical eye care operation.

“Eyeland is more family-oriented eye care,” she said. “We pride ourselves in getting to know our patients.”

Macurak added, “You’re not just a number here.”

“It’s like a small little family,” she said. “We really do care about our patients.”

Macurak said there are typically four employees at the site.

Sam Jennings, the primary doctor, said patients can receive routine eye exams, medical exams and small emergency eye exams.

“We also look at the entire health of the eye,” Jennings said. “We make sure we cover all the bases so that they are comfortable with us.”

Jennings said it’s that type of comfort level that allows the business to continue to flourish.

“When you come here, you’re going to see the same staff,” she said. “We really just know our patients.”

Same-day appointments are available.

Macurak said the business also conducts retail sales, such as glasses, and contact lens sales.

“COVID certainly slowed down some things, but eye care certainly was not,” Macurak said. “We’ve been able to see a pretty steady flow.”

Eyeland is a five-generation family-owned business with roots that go back to the 1800s when the current owners’ great-great-great-grandfather would go door-to-door selling eyeglasses in New York City, according to Scott Messinger, president.

Messinger said that in those days, a person just selected eyewear from a box until they found a pair that improved their vision.

Eyeland currently has 14 locations throughout the state, and is one of the largest remaining family-owned eye care chains in the United States.

Our goal is to provide quality eye care in a relaxed friendly environment,” Messinger said. “At Eyeland, we are committed to our local communities and have provided free eyewear in times of need.”

Owned by the Messinger family, Eyeland has also been committed to animal rescue since 2012.

“We have rescued over 6,000 shelter animals so far, and want our patients to know that it is their purchases that help fund our animal rescue work,” Messinger said.

The business continues to accept new patients and follows all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
