The Mahoning Drive-in theater to open for 72nd season

The Mahoning Drive-in Theater located on Seneca Road in Lehighton will open for its 72nd season on Friday with the annual double feature: “The Wizard of Oz” and “Willy Wonka.”

The two films will also be presented on Saturday.

Festivities include an on-site Golden Ticket Contest (presented by Paris Themmen; Mike TV in the original film), themed sets and costumed characters.

Gates open at 6 p.m. with showtime at sundown.

The Mahoning has hit legendary status in recent years thanks to national exposure with the wide release of “At The Drive-In” documentary.

“What The Mahoning offers each weekend is like a step back in time. The original marquee, concession lobby and massive CinemaScope screen. Not to mention the original projection system which draws folks from miles. The nationwide love for our passion is truly inspiring. We are so proud that the mission to save our drive-in was successful and has shifted into a movement towards being champions in the revival of the drive-in culture,” says Virgil Cardamone, partner and curator.

In 2020, the Mahoning saw a lot of new fans looking for a safe escape during the pandemic. The team was awarded for its work in keeping guests safe by the Carbon/Lehigh Chamber.

Their Podcast “Mahoning Drive-in Radio” recently launched.

By exclusively showing classic movies on original 35 mm film the drive-in is known as “America’s Only All Retro 35 mm Drive-In.”

Planned events for the 2021 season include: “The Blob,” with proceeds supporting the Colonial Theatre, ZombieFest, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall,” Reel Rumble (live wrestling), Joe Bob Briggs Jamboree, Western Sundays, Disney Sundays, Tuesday single features and Thursday Chamber fundraisers.

A full list of events, showings and times can be found at the Mahoning Drive-In website, www.mahoningdit.com or on their Facebook page.
