Two children were rescued from Lake Harmony on Tuesday.
Fire Chief Ralph Lennon said the department, Lake Harmony and Lehighton ambulances were dispatched around noon for a reported drowning. The occupants were wearing life vests, although they were adult sized.
Kevin Jones, who lives in Jamison, but has a house in Lake Harmony, said he was outside at his grill when he heard someone scream for help. Onlookers were at the beach but couldn’t reach those in distress.
Five people were in the water out of their canoe. A mother, father and three children. The mother, father and son eventually made it to shore. Lennon said the boy had hypothermia.
Jones rescued the two young girls, ages 3 and 5.
He paddled to the father before reaching the girls.
“She was under the water, completely submerged,” he said of the 3-year-old, whose arm was visible on top of the water.
He pulled her into the kayak.
“She never responded when I had her,” he said, fearing the worst.
The 5-year-old was floating on the water when Jones reached her.
“She just hugged me and started crying,” he said.
Lennon said a nurse from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia assisted ambulance personnel with the girl. She was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown, he said. Jones was told the child is conscious.
Jones credited EMS workers who took measures to save her life. He is thankful he was able to help.
“There’s a lot of God coincidences. A lot of very fortunate events,” he said.
