Missing Mahanoy man’s body found Friday

Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky has identified the body found in the woods Friday in Mahanoy Township as Michael Startzel, 36, of Mahanoy City.

Truskowsky said the man had been missing since February. He pronounced Startzel at 8:20 p.m.

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David G. Moylan IIII said the body appeared to have been there “for weeks.”

According to the Mahanoy Township police department, he was last seen Feb. 14.

Moylan said a virtual autopsy was scheduled for 1 p.m. at The Simon Kramer Cancer Institute, New Philadelphia.

Mahanoy Township Police Chief Brandon Alexander said he responded to the wooded area about 400 yards east of the Vulcan Hill and adjacent to White Owl Manor Road at 6 p.m.

“Someone was hiking and found the body,” he said.

He said the state police forensic unit out of Reading was on scene Friday. Alexander turned the investigation over to state police.
