Woman who locked son in bedroom given short jail term

A Lansford woman who previously admitted locking her son in his bedroom for over 10 hours was sentenced to a short prison term on Thursday.

Geri Lynn Survis, 41, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve one to 18 months in prison on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child and the same term on a charge of unlawful restraining/involuntary servitude. The terms run concurrently.

Survis and her boyfriend, Shawn Joseph Murphy, 49, were arrested by Lansford police following the incident that occurred on Feb. 9, 2020. Police charged the two with locking Survis’ son, who is a minor, and the child’s friend, in a room and screwing the door shut.

Murphy previously pleaded guilty to his part in the incident and was sentenced by Nanovic to serve one to 18 months in the county prison on charges of unlawful restraint and endangering the welfare of a child.

Earlier in February 2020, police were dispatched to a residence on the 200 block of East Ridge Street for a cut wrist. When authorities arrived, Survis, said Murphy had locked them and their 18-year-old friend in the child’s bedroom, using a drill to secure the door.

The child and the friend were trapped for about 10 hours until Survis allowed them out to eat the next morning. The two were eventually locked up again and weren’t given access to a bathroom.

The child, police say, told authorities Murphy had also punched them, and Survis slapped them.

When entering her plea, Survis at first denied locking the child up but then admitted her part in the incident.

She was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, attend and successfully complete both anger management and parenting classes, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

She was given credit for eight days already served. She will begin serving the remaining time on consecutive weekends at 10 a.m. on March 19.
