Schuylkill woman sent to state prison on drug count

A Schuylkill County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Thursday in Carbon County court on a drug charge.

Shyann Nichole Boyer, 26, of Schuylkill Haven, was sentenced to serve one to three years in a state correctional institution by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II on a charge of criminal use of a communication facility, a felony 3. She previously pleaded to the charge.

She was arrested on June 27, 2020, at the county prison after correction officers found she brought illegal substances into the prison. In exchange for the plea the commonwealth dropped other felony counts of contraband/controlled substances into the prison and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Nanovic noted that a presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation office indicated that correction officers believed Boyer was running an operation of bringing drugs into the prison. She denied that allegation.

Nanovic also noted that the report states Boyer has never had any type of employment. When asked by Nanovic why, Boyer responded, “I got wrapped up in doing drugs and nothing normal.”

In addition to the prison term, she was ordered to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, supply a DNA sample, get her GED diploma and pay court costs of about $1,000.

Her sentencing was done via video from the county prison.
