West Penn eyes new truck, weapon upgrades for police

The West Penn board of supervisors approved two motions to help give the township police department a boost.

Glenn Hummel, supervisor in charge of the police department, wants to acquire a 2021 police truck, which is almost identical to the other West Penn police vehicle.

Hummel noted that $20,000 was budgeted for last year and there is $20,000 earmarked for 2021. He asked for permission to add an additional $20,000 - for a total of $60,000.

“We’re looking to purchase a new truck next year,” Hummel said. “But we got a good price on a leftover truck this year. If we look at it and get a great price, I’d like to get the money to pay it off.”

Hummel said the plan is to upgrade a vehicle every couple of years.

In addition to a new vehicle, a motion was passed to acquire ammunition and weapon upgrades. The total cost is $6,373. Hummel said the plan is to also upgrade weapons and ammunition every five or six years.
