Palmerton proposes five-day return

Parents could soon have the choice to send their children to school in-person five days a week in Palmerton Area School District.

Superintendent Dr. Jodi Frankelli alerted parents Sunday night via a robocall that an updated health and safety plan proposal will be on the table at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

“The plan would give the option for a full-time return to school after the spring break,” Frankelli said in the message.

Students are back in school April 5 following the break.

Many Palmerton parents have been pushing for a full-time return to in-person schooling and an online petition started earlier this month received over 400 signatures.

Palmerton parents currently have four options: a hybrid model where most children attend school in person two days per week and participate virtually for the other three; full five-day virtual instruction, the in-house Blue Bombers Cyber Academy or an outside charter/cyber school.

Northern Lehigh is returning students to school four days per week starting Monday for elementary and March 22 for middle and high school.

Pleasant Valley voted Thursday night 7-2 to return all students to full time instruction on March 29.

Frankelli said Palmerton’s health and safety plan proposal would be posted to the district website, www.palmerton.org, on Monday.

Registration for Tuesday’s board meeting, held via Zoom, is also available on the website.
