Pleasant Valley students celebrate reading

In order to make sure all of its students had a chance to join in the celebration, Pleasant Valley Elementary School stretched Read Across America Day on March 2 over two weeks.

Students and staff alike dressed up as their favorite storybook characters. Some departments even came up with a theme. The guidance department chose “Alice in Wonderland” complete with Alice, the Queen of Hearts and one of her guards, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire Cat.

Renee Moore, a first-grade reading specialist, chose to dress up as Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series. She said Ms. Frizzle, who has a boisterous and vibrant personality, fits her personality, too.

“She does,” agreed Cheryl Heckman, a member of the office staff.

“I want to channel Ms. Frizzle,” Moore said. “She uses everything she has to make learning fun for the kids.”

Not all of the students were dressed up on Tuesday, but they were sprinkled throughout the classrooms. A Disney princess was in kindergarten, Thing One and Thing Two were out and about, and Pikachu made an appearance in second grade. Many were taking a moment to read.
