Diakon Community Services seeks volunteers for special meal deliveries

Diakon Community Services is seeking volunteers for a special meals-delivery effort to Meals on Wheels consumers one day per month from March through June.

“We must deliver 500 large, 25-pound boxes containing shelf-stable food to participants of the Meals on Wheels program March 27, April 24, May 22 and June 12,” says Susan Long, director of Diakon Community Services and Diakon Living & Learning.

The special packages are being made possible as a result of funding from the CARES Act through the state Department of Aging and the Schuylkill County Office of Senior Services, she said.

“Whether you are a member of a community group or an individual who would like to help your neighbors, we need your help,” Long said. “And we need assistance whether you can help one Saturday, two or all four of them.”

In addition to individual volunteers, she said, program staff are asking community groups, school district, fire departments, businesses and others to field teams to help, perhaps making their response into a “friendly competition” among similar teams.

People or groups interested in volunteering should contact Kathi Conahan-Baltzelle, volunteer coordinator, via email at mealsonwheels@diakon.org or by telephone at 570-624-3013.

Diakon Community Services manages the Meals on Wheels program in Schuylkill County under a contract with the Schuylkill County Office of Senior Services with funding from the state Department of Aging.
