Lenten services

Effort UMC’s Lenten services continue at 7 tonight, with 40 people able to be in the sanctuary. One must register to attend.

The service is a continuation of a series based on: Seven Things the Lord Hates, featuring the North District clergy.

Among this area’s presenters are The Rev. Robin Fisher, Effort UMC, for Session 5, which focuses on A Lying Witness Who Testifies Falsely - perjury vs. honesty in legal and civil matters, I Kings 21:1-18, Jezebel’s Scoundrels: Justice Perverted; and The Rev. Paul R. Crikelair, Cherry Valley UMC and Poplar Valley UMC, for Session 7, which focuses on Hands that Shed Innocent Blood - tolerating violence and murder rather than preservation of life, II Samuel 11, David and Uriah: This Man was Innocent.

Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, will present the session 8, post Easter: Resurrection Power Moves Us to Life and Godliness.

Lenten events

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church offers livestreamed Lenten events as follows:

Morning prayer every Friday morning before Mass at 7:30 a.m. with Deacon Bob. Join others in church or livestream.

Stations of the Cross Fridays at 7 p.m. Join in live­stream or in church.

Join Deacon Bob for Reflection and recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet Mondays at 3 p.m. and D&D Scripture & Coffee Talk, Tuesdays at 1 p.m.

Pantry open

The SFRC, Supplemental Food Resource Center, based at Effort UMC, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Men’s group meets

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church invites all men 18 and older to join the church’s men’s group. It will next meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in McCawley Hall.

Drive-in worship

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, has a drive-in service on the calendar for 9 a.m. Sunday.

Blood drive set

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is hosting a Miller-Keystone Blood Center blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church in the parking lot.

Lenten Confessions

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will continue to have Confessions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Monday through March 22.

It is hoped that people will come throughout Lent so that a long line on the last Monday of Lent can be avoided.

Ross meeting

The Ross Township Board of Supervisors meeting is on the calendar for 7 p.m. Monday. The meeting is held at the Ross Township Municipal Building on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.

Prayer shawls

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl ministry will meet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Chestnuthill

The Chestnuthill Board of Supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Blood drive

The Brodheadsville satellite site for Miller-Keystone Blood Center at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville is slated to be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for whole blood collections and for automated collections from 7:30 a.m. to noon March 3.

The American Red Cross is having a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 3 at the Monroe County Conservation District on Running Valley Road.

Food needed?

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, will be distributing free food boxes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday through March. The boxes, from Farmers to Families Food Boxes, are slated to include dairy, meat, vegetables and fruit.

No registration is necessary, just drive up and pick up.

Personal care kits

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is working on collecting items for Lutheran World Relief personal care kits.

Cabin Fever info

Quiet Valley is offering a Cabin Fever workshop from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 9.

It includes up to two crafts and enjoying a homemade lunch of soup, bread and dessert.

Currently only three workshops remain open: Scherenschnitte in the a.m. and Sweet Treats and Scherenschnitte in the p.m.

Lasagna dinner

Effort UMC will be accepting orders for traditional homemade lasagna with or without meat, through March 14. The dinner, to be picked up between 4 and 7 p.m. March 19, will include lasagna, salad, garlic bread and dessert. It will come in two sizes, for either two or four people. Girlfriends meet

This weekend’s Rise & Shine Breakfast and Bible Study, as hosted by the Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, is at full capacity.

The next one is set for March 20.

Marriage longevity

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church recently announced six couples celebrating 50-plus years of marriage: Andy and Rocky Alleshouse, Kasimiez and Martha Gadecki, Vinzon and Letty Lee, John and Fran McInerney, and Leo and June Weir.

Fleetwood scholarship

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is offering two David Fleetwood Memorial scholarships in 2021 to deserving Pleasant Valley School District graduates.

In 2021, each scholarship recipient will receive $2,000 as per certain guidelines.

All properly completed applications must be received by the West End Park and Open Space Commission on or before April 15.
