Schuylkill makes budget adjustments

Schuylkill County Commissioners approved several budget adjustments for 2020 at 2021 at their meeting Feb. 17.

For 2020, commissioners voted for a budget adjustment of $102,332 to cover for overtime and new hiring costs for the Schuylkill County Prison. Finance Director Paul Buber said of the amount, $26,900 is for overtime and $75,300 to hire new employees. Money was coming from a part-time employees line item.

“No money is being moved from contingency,” he said.

For 2021, money was adjusted between accounts but did not increase overall spending. The following changes were made: Human Resources $35, domestic relations office $827, the sheriff’s office $1,870 and the coroner’s office $2,000.

The money for the sheriff’s office is for the final payment for two cameras and installation at the courthouse, Chief Deputy Brian Tobin said. The older cameras will be repurposed. The purchase of body bags accounts for the money from the coroner’s office.

Two supplemental budget appropriations were approved, one for children and youth for $7,890 for security improvements made that were not included in the department’s 2021 budget. Buber said the work continued into January. The second of $2,600.08 from the prison commissary account is to finish a prison-related project involving a fingerprint machine in the prison.

Commissioners’ Chairman Barron “Boots” Hetherington did not attend the meeting.
