Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 23

Tamaqua, Northern Lehigh and Weatherly all picked up wins in girls basketball action on Tuesday.

The Blue Raiders also split in swimming with Hazleton, as the girls posted the victories.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lehighton-Tamaqua

A big fourth quarter helped Tamaqua earn a 63-49 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton in its final home game of the season.

Sophia Boyle scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the final frame as the Blue Raiders (12-9; 8-6) used a 19-4 period to erase a one-point deficit.

The winners, who hit 11 three-pointers in the contest, also received 11 points and five assists from McKenna Meckes, while Emma Hope added 11 rebounds.

Ashley Marchessault and Hailey Miller both scored 13 points for the Indians (9-10; 6-8), who jumped out to a six-point advantage after the first quarter.

In the JV game, Lehighton won 51-24 behind 20 points from Katie Wojton. Tamaqua’s Lorelei Plasha led her team with 16.

Northern Lehigh evened its record at 5-5 by holding on for a 38-32 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Aubrey Pollard scored 12 points to pace the Bulldogs, who led by nine points after three quarters.

The winners also received eight points from Madison Seier.

Cora Soltis tallied a team-high nine points for the Rough Riders.

Lincoln LA-Weatherly

Ashley James scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to help Weatherly gain a 46-38 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

James contributed to an 11-0 third quarter run that allowed the Wreckers (3-15) to build a 14-point lead. She also hit 9-of-10 free throws during the final period to help seal the win.

Bethany Houser contributed eight points to the Weatherly cause, while the Lions received a team-high 14 points from Jennel Watkins.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Catasauqua-No. Lehigh

Derek Troxell scored nine of his game-high 23 points during the decisive second quarter as Catasauqua earned a Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Rough Riders used a 22-10 second frame to break a tie and eventually go on for a 63-44 win.

DeSean Smith tallied 16 points, including 13 in the second half, to lead the Bulldogs (1-10), while Ardit Mujovic finished with 15.

Catty also received 12 points from Ty Reitz.

Tamaqua-Lincoln LA

Tamaqua rallied late, but still dropped a 78-73 non-league decision to Lincoln Leadership Academy.

Nate Gregoire scored a game-high 22 points for the Blue Raiders, who trailed by 15 points entering the final period before attempting a comeback.

Luke Verta added 17 points to the Tamaqua cause, while Nate Hope tallied 11 and Brady Sherry chipped in with 10.

The winners, who used a 29-point second quarter to take command early, received 18 points from Tyler Driscoll.

The loss dropped the Raiders to 2-18.

SWIMMING

Hazleton Area-Tamaqua

The Tamaqua girls pulled out a one-point victory to help the Blue Raiders earn a split in their non-league meet with Hazleton.

Firsts in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay helped the Tamaqua girls gain an 85-84 win. Madelyn Jones, Maura Walker and Rylee Wenzel were all members of those winning relay teams.

In the boys competition, the Cougars took first in every event to capture a 121-44 victory.
