Lehighton OKs student group

A new Lehighton Area High School student group got the stamp of approval Monday night from the district’s board of directors.

Student for Life, according to a request form submitted to the district, aims to “create positive dialogue in school about options regarding teen pregnancy.”

Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said a high school student brought forth the request for the group.

Student Madison Kemmerer said a small group of students will organize meetings, which will be done via Zoom until it is safe to meet in person. Any events would be compliant with COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

One of the main purposes of the group, Kemmerer said in her request form, is to discuss political issues and educate future voters on the issues.

A benefit, she added, would be for the group to “become a support network for women in the community who need a hand.”

Fred Kemmerer, Madison’s father, said during Monday night’s meeting there are a great set of advisers from Care Net looking to help the new group.

“Madison has been diligent about this for the last five months and it is great for the community to have another club supportive of students and the local population,” Fred said.
