Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 20-21

The Jim Thorpe boys earned a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating Minersville on Saturday and Panther Valley on Sunday.

Other winners included the Lehighton and Weatherly boys.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Panther Valley

A huge second half lifted Jim Thorpe to a 73-44 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Kaiden Herron scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter as the Olympians (11-7; 7-5) wiped out a slim halftime deficit with a 25-9 period.

Thorpe, which now has a four-game winning streak, also received 16 points from Caiden Hurley and nine from Derryl Fisher.

Michael Pascoe paced PV (4-13; 2-10) with 14 points, while Andrew Kokinda added nine.

In the JV game, the Olympians posted a 52-42 win behind 22 points from Colby McHugh. PV’s Bradley Hood finished with 18 points.

Jim Thorpe outscored Minersville in every quarter to claim a 62-43 non-league victory over Minersville.

Jared Marykwas scored all seven of his points in the opening half as the Olympians jumped out to a 29-14 lead.

Thorpe received a team-high 18 points from Chris Condly, while Caiden Hurley finished with 11.

Xavier Noble of the Battlin’ Miners led all scorers with 23 points.

Lehighton-Shenandoah Vy.

A strong showing at the free throw line allowed Lehighton to gain a 57-48 non-league victory over Shenandoah Valley.

The Indians (9-8) outscored their opponent by 13 points at the stripe, where they finished 20-of-25.

Richard Yturrino, who scored 18 points, and Dylan Guyn, who tallied 13, were both 4-of-4 at the line.

The winners also received nine points from Zach Hunsicker and eight from Carter Strauss.

Luke Matta paced the Devils with 16 points.

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Scotty Zoscin scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter to help Weatherly build a big lead and cruise to a 65-45 victory over Schuylkill Haven.

The Wreckers led by three points after the first frame but used a 20-6 second period to take control of the game.

Antonio Colecio finished with 17 points for the winners, who improved to 13-6 - their most wins in a season since 2009-10 when they had 14.

The Hurricanes were led by Jack Higgins, who finished with 20 points.

Weatherly also won the JV game, 50-36.

Tamaqua-Notre Dame (ES)

Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg jumped on Tamaqua early and coasted to an 84-45 non-league win over Tamaqua.

Aaron Bailey had 23 points to lead the Crusaders, who raced to a 30-7 first-quarter lead. Trevor Hardy contributed 22 points to the victory, while Xavier Spears added 20.

The Blue Raiders (2-17) received a team-high 16 points from Luke Verta, with Nate Gregoire chipping in with 11.

In the JV game, Tamaqua gained a convincing 63-44 win.

A fast start by CJ Miles and Bangor produced a 57-24 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Miles tallied 14 of his team’s 24 points in the opening quarter as the Slaters built a 20-point advantage. Miles finished with a game-high 22 points.

The Bulldogs (1-9; 1-8) were led in scoring by Ryan Hammond’s eight points.

East Stroudsburg South pulled away from Pleasant Valley to gain a 63-34 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Gabriel Mileto scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the third quarter as the Cavaliers pushed a 10-point halftime lead to 24 entering the final frame.

The Bears (2-9; 2-8) received eight points from both Donald Francois and Marcus Arce.

Marian hung with Mahanoy Area for a quarter before the Golden Bears took control and registered a 57-35 Schuylkill League victory.

The Fillies (4-8; 4-7) trailed by just one point after the first frame but their visitors used a 25-3 second period to put the game out of reach.

Mahanoy’s Claudia Clark led all scorers with 23 points, while Marian received 12 points from Carly Minchoff.

The Raptors, who built an 18-0 lead before the Wreckers could get on the board, were led by Waiters’ 24 points. T’nyah Riggins also tallied 22 points.

Weatherly (2-15) received a team-high 14 points from Emma Kane, while Bethany Houser chipped in with eight.

North Schuylkill won its 10th consecutive league game by posting a 64-50 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Mya Wetzel scored 23 points to pace the Spartans, who led by 24 at halftime.

The Blue Raiders (11-9; 8-6) received 14 points from McKenna Meckes, while Sophia Boyle and Serena Jones both finished with 12.

North Schuylkill also won the JV game, 63-26, despite 16 points from Tamaqua’s Lorelei Plasha.
