Lansford man admits to endangering count, gets jail time

A Lansford man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Carbon County court to a recklessly endangering charge and was sentenced to a county prison term.

Travis Litts, 34, was arrested following an incident on Nov. 6, 2018, in Lansford. Police responded to a report of a fight. On scene, they observed Litts as one of the people involved. As police got out of their vehicle, Litts charged at them. A struggle ensued and police had to use a stun gun to bring him under control.

Police said Litts told them he wanted police to shoot him.

Litts admitted to having long-term mental health issues. His attorney, Matthew G. Schnell, said after the incident Litts addressed his mental health issues and entered an inpatient rehabilitation program. He also spent time in prison on the charges.

Litts told Serfass, “I’m remorseful.” He said his inpatient program helped him.

Serfass rejected a request to give Litts a time-served sentence by giving him credit for the inpatient stay and prison term.

Serfass told Litts, “I’m glad you have taken steps to address your issues.” He added, “This is a serious matter,” noting Litts’ prior criminal record. He said an additional prison term is appropriate considering what happened in the case.

Serfass sentenced Litts to serve nine to one day less 24 months in prison with total credit of 209 days. Litts was also ordered to get both a mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, render 100 hours of community service when paroled, and have no contact with the victim in the initial fight report.

He will begin serving the remainder of his jail term at 9 a.m. on March 5 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.

In a plea deal with the DA office, charges of simple assault, resisting arrest and harassment were dropped.
