Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 13

Lehighton’s boys and girls both earned wins on Saturday, as both teams defeated Pen Argyl.

Elsewhere, the Jim Thorpe boys finished strong to defeat Mahanoy Area, while the Northwestern and Tamaqua girls both picked up victories over other Times News area teams.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pen Argyl-Lehighton

Lehighton recovered from a first-quarter deficit to gain to a 55-36 non-league victory over Pen Argyl.

The Green Knights led by three points after the first eight minutes, but an 18-8 second frame gave the Indians the lead for good.

Zach Hunsicker finished with a game-high 14 points for Lehighton (6-7), while Jack Lorenz contributed 13. The winners also received eight points from Mason Costenbader.

Pen Argyl (1-8) was led by Matt Raggozino’s 11 points.

Jim Thorpe-Mahanoy Area

A big fourth quarter, along with excellent foul shooting, helped Jim Thorpe gain a 55-37 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.

Kaiden Herron scored six of his game-high 18 points in the final period as the Olympians (8-7) broke open a tight game by outscoring the Bears by a 19-4 margin.

Thorpe hit all seven of its free throws in the last frame and finished the contest a perfect 14-of-14 from the line.

The winners also received 11 points from Chris Condly, while Kadin Styka paced Mahanoy with 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Palmerton

Northwestern improved its record to 11-1 after holding off Palmerton for a 49-42 Colonial League victory.

Paige Sevrain poured in a game-high 21 points for the Tigers, now 9-1 in league play, who jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter.

Alexandra Lister contributed nine points, including seven in the final period to help Northwestern stay ahead, while Sydney Nyce also finished with nine.

For the Blue Bombers (8-4; 6-3), Brianna Moore ended with a team-high 19 points. Sydney Frantz and Beth Morgan both chipped in with eight.

Lehighton-Pen Argyl

Lehighton evened its record at 8-8 after posting a 62-42 non-league victory over Pen Argyl.

Hailey Miller finished with a game-high 20 points for the Indians, who outscored their opponent by a 34-17 margin in the middle frames.

Ashley Marchessault contributed 12 points to the win, while Aaliyah Fisher chipped in with eight.

The Knights received a team-high 12 points from Rose Falletta.

In the JV game, Pen Argyl earned a 34-30 win.

Panther Valley-Tamaqua

Tamaqua got out of the gates early, racing to an early lead en route to a 48-36 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

McKenna Meckes tallied eight of her 10 points in the first quarter as the Blue Raiders (11-6; 10-3) built a 20-4 advantage.

Serena Jones scored a team-high 12 points for Tamaqua, while Trenyce Wingler finished with 11 and Makenna Kane chipped in with nine.

For the Panthers (4-13; 2-11), Erika Dubosky netted a game-high 13 points. PV also received nine points from both Sera Robin and Maddison Maynard.

WRESTLING

JT at Salisbury Duals

Jim Thorpe participated in the Salisbury Duals over the weekend.

The Olympians finished 3-2 at the event with victories over Salisbury (27-18), Williams Valley (29-16) and Kutztown Area (36-12). Their setbacks came against Twin Valley (47-12) and Western Wayne (66-6).

Gabe Heaney, who wrestled at both 152 and 160 pounds, and Derek Hunter (285) led the way for Thorpe, as both finished with perfect 5-0 marks. Heaney scored three forfeits, a pin and a decision, while Hunter earned three pins and two forfeits.

Ridge Snyder, at 120 and 126 pounds, was 3-2 with a pin, technical fall and a forfeit.

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL

8TH GRADE

Jim Thorpe-Weatherly

Jim Thorpe defeated Weatherly, 47-32.

The Olympians’ B. McHugh led all scorers with a game-high 33 points.

Ian McKeegan scored 20 points to pace the Wreckers.

7TH GRADE

Jim Thorpe earned a 49-32 victory over Weatherly.

The Olympians’ C. Lazrick scored a game-high 17 points, while L. Edwards finished with 10.

Jacob Tom finished with 15 points to lead the Wreckers.
