Coaldale seeks snow removal cooperation

Coaldale Borough is asking for cooperation from residents as snow removal continues around the borough.

The borough’s workers have been using social media, a loudspeaker and door-to-door visits to let people know when they plan to plow curb-to-curb. They’re also ticketing cars as a last resort.

“If people see flashing lights on the vehicles, or they hear the trucks, they need to move their car. Please be wary of the plows. We are doing the best we can,” said Claire Remington, chair of the borough council’s streets committee.

Borough workers and contractors have already done curb-to-curb plowing on some borough streets, and expect to continue throughout the week.

During a council meeting Tuesday night, they added two additional part-time plow drivers, David Wensel and Nick Kokinda.

Remington said that the storm has already exhausted the borough’s budget for snow removal, but they plan to continue working. She estimated that the borough’s cost for contractors, equipment and materials could exceed $25,000 by the time the snow is removed, exceeding the annual $20,000 budget. The contractors for snow removal are Peter J. Radocha and Sons, and Frank Hutta Construction.

Council President Angela Krapf said the snow removal budget has enough for an average winter. Some winters are more mild and others more severe.

“We’ve been lucky the last few years. We were due for this,” she said.
