Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 5

The Northwestern boys and girls basketball teams both picked up wins against Saucon Valley on Friday.

The Tamaqua and Palmerton girls and Weatherly boys also posted victories, as did the Lehighton, Palmerton and Tamaqua wrestling teams, while Jim Thorpe earned a split in its tri-match.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Northwestern ran its winning streak to six games with a 44-30 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Cade Christopher scored nine of his 11 points in the middle frames when the Tigers (9-3; 7-1) outscored the Panthers by a 28-16 margin.

The winners also received 11 points from Cayden Fitch, while Dylan Witkowski chipped in with nine.

NORTHWESTERN

Scotty Zoscin’s big night lifted Weatherly past Minersville, 63-56.

Zoscin paced the Wreckers (10-3) with 30 points - including six 3s - and 11 rebounds while Antonio Colecio added 14 points and Trevor Lowman tallied 11.

Connor Schwalm had 16 points for Minersville (0-5).

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe

Blue Mountain stopped Jim Thorpe’s winning streak at seven games with a 65-50 Schuylkill League victory.

Kade Henninger led five Eagles (7-2) in double figures with 15 points.

Chris Condly paced the Olympians (7-5) with 19 points. Caiden Hurley and Kaiden Herron both scored 11 in the team’s first loss since Jan. 14.

Pottsville pulled away for a 49-32 Schuylkill League win against Lehighton.

Nicco Heimbaugh had 12 points for the Tide (10-1).

Richard Yturrino had 13 points for the Tribe (5-5), who led after the first quarter (10-8) and trailed by just six (29-23) heading into the fourth.

Pottsville also won the JV game, 52-30.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Shenandoah Vy.

A big second quarter helped Tamaqua take command en route to a 54-26 non-league win over Shenandoah Valley.

Sophia Boyle, Trenyce Wingler and Serene Jones all had 12 points apiece for the Raiders (8-5), who turned a three-point deficit at the end of the first quarter into a 28-14 halftime advantage.

McKenna Meckes added 10 points in the win.

Tamaqua also won the JV game, 28-25. Lorelei Plasha had 12 points in the win.

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern

Northwestern bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 50-10 win over Saucon Valley in Colonial League action.

Paige Sevrain had 14 points for the Tigers (9-1), who fell to Notre Dame Thursday. Sevrain scored all of her points in the first half, helping Northwestern build a 32-5 advantage.

Sydney Nyce added 10 points in the victory.

Palmerton cruised to a 59-28 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

Raegan Nemeth scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half as the Blue Bombers (6-2; 6-1) raced to a 34-9 halftime lead.

The winners received a game-high 18 points from Brianna Moore, while Beth Morgan chipped in with eight.
