West End news for Feb. 3, 2021

Legion meetings

Scheduled meetings at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert for the next seven days, weather permitting, include the West End Home Association meeting at 7:30 tonight. To verify, call B. Moyer at 570-350-6959.

Also scheduled for the week is the monthly Legion, Post 927, meeting, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday; The Super Bowl 55 Special at 6 p.m. Sunday, continuing until the game is over; and the Sons of the American Legion at 7 p.m. Monday.

The Auxiliary meeting is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 10, with the executive committee meeting at 6 p.m.

Sale underway

Effort UMC’s current soup sale is underway. PA Dutch ham, potato and cabbage soup as well as Italian chicken noodle are being offered.

Orders are being accepted through Feb. 17.

Pickup of orders is on Feb. 21.

Snowy saunter

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is holding a snowy saunter at Kettle Creek at 10 a.m. Saturday through the woods to enjoy the rapture of winter.

Folks are invited to bundle up for a meandering meditation on the trails as participants contemplate the role and rewards of winter ecologically and internally.

There will be pauses along the way to reveal some of winter’s mysteries and read musings of naturalist-philosopher Henry David Thoreau.

Participants should keep in mind that the Education Center building will be closed and the trails may be snow-covered. Therefore they should dress accordingly.

Masks will be required of all participants. Preregistration is required by Friday by calling 570-629-3061. There is a cost.

Virtual services

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, continues with virtual services each Sunday in February.

Sunday school

This coming Sunday, the Body Building class at Effort UMC will report directly to Wesley Hall at 11:15 a.m.

On Monday, Body Building will meet via Zoom at 6 p.m. and Pre-teens and Teens will meet at 6 p.m. via Zoom Feb. 10.

Registration needed

Effort UMC is having in-person services at 8:30, 10 and 11:15 a.m. One must register if planning to attend through the church website or by calling the church office.

The recorded service can be viewed at effortumc.org after 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Meeting canceled

Operation Touch of Home has canceled its February monthly meeting. March’s meeting is to be decided.

Minister welcomed

Middlecreek Christian Church, Kresgeville, will welcome its new pastor, Jeremy Woodhouse, at its 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday as he preaches his first sermon.

He and his wife, Kimberly, have recently moved here from Montana, having served a church in Victor, Montana. They have previously been in ministry in Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alaska, Colorado and Michigan. Masks are required while walking about, but may be removed while in one’s seat. The church is located at 343 Dorshimer Road, Kresgeville.

Souper Bowl set

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is beginning a Souper Bowl on Sunday, when the church kicks off its monthlong celebration of thinking of others.

That Souper Bowl is collecting cans of soup, cans of sauce - no glass, please - and boxes of pasta.

Items collected during the month will then be distributed to both West End Pantry and PVEN.

Marriage week

The Observance of National Marriage Week begins Sunday. It continues through Feb 14, which is celebrated at World Marriage Day.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will hold a special Mass celebrating all married couples at 11 a.m. Feb. 14.

A special acknowledgment of those couples celebrating 25 or 50-plus years will be made, providing the church has been contacted.

UMW meeting

The next meeting of the United Methodist Women of Effort Methodist Church is set for 7 p.m. Monday, in Wesley Hall.

Masks are to be worn and social distancing practiced.

WEPOSC meeting

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville on Feb. 10. To verify, call 570-992-9733.

Healing Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate the World Day of the Sick, memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, with a healing Mass and anointing of the Sick at 12:10 p.m. Feb. 11.

Parishioners who are unable to attend Mass, and who would like to be anointed at home, are asked to call the office the church office at 610-681-6137.

Drive-in breakfast

McMichaels UMC is having a donation-only drive-in breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Feb. 13.

Water baptism

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, is holding a water baptism Feb. 14, during the 11 a.m. service. If interested, fill out the registration form at https://pvag.breezechms.com/form/fbf6e0 or call the church at 570-992-6799.

Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s living historical farm, has announced it is having an herbal tea making workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Engel Education Center.

Flea market set

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has announced its annual flea market fundraiser for this year on June 25-27. The fundraiser will be a smaller scale version, similar to the rummage sale of last year.

It will be an outdoor only event under the church pavilion and in large tents, in order to practice safe and social distancing measures.
