Wintry mix expected Tuesday

A wintry mix is expected to lead to hazardous travel conditions on Tuesday.

The storm is expected to develop sometime between 1-4 a.m., and continue lasting through the morning hours, according to Mike Doll, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

“It will initially come in as snow, though there is a possibility that it does mix with some sleet and perhaps even some freezing rain as we get toward the midmorning hours on Tuesday,” Doll said. “The front end of the storm will be snow, but we do anticipate it can be a transition to some sleet and freezing rain.”

Doll added the timing of the storm means roads could be rather dangerous for motorists to traverse.

“Road crews will be out treating, putting down a lot of salt I imagine, (but) motorists should treat the road as if there’s no salt down,” he said. “It will be slippery tomorrow morning, so the morning commute will certainly have its hazards due to slippery roads.”

Doll said the forecast for snowfall is between 1 to 3 inches.

“We do expect temperature to get just above freezing tomorrow, but that’s not going to occur until sometime midafternoon,” he said. “The roads potentially could be slippery through the morning and early afternoon until they get above freezing until midafternoon.”

Doll said once the system moves out, most of the Tuesday night period does look dry, though he added not to rule out there could be a few snow flurries that are expected to be out of the area by sunrise Wednesday.

He said Wednesday morning may start with temperatures above freezing, but that it will turn gradually colder as the day goes on with slowly falling temps.

Doll said temperatures will then fall back down to below freezing by mid- to late afternoon Wednesday.

He said Wednesday night into Thursday looks to be dry, but cold and windy.

“I think the big take-aways are hazardous driving conditions for tomorrow morning, with some improvement as we get later in the afternoon,” Doll said. “Wednesday night, Thursday, is going to be much colder than what we’ll be experiencing over the next couple days with highs generally in the 30s, which will be quite a difference.”
