Minersville man tried to elude police, dies in quarry

A 23-year-old Minersville man died after he went over a fence surrounding a quarry and was found in the water in Berks County.

Kevin Neiswender, assistant chief deputy with the Berks County Coroner’s office, said Sunday Joshua Fontanez-Rodriguez was pronounced dead on scene at 12:30 p.m. Saturday by Deputy Coroner Jason Kantner. The quarry is located in the 4100 block of the Fifth Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township.

An autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at Reading Hospital.

Muhlenberg Township police said they were dispatched at 10:34 a.m. Friday to the Target store for a suspected shoplifter. They encountered Fontanez-Rodriguez who police said was the suspected retail theft suspect. He later ran from the store.

Butch Trout, dive captain with the Schuylkill Haven Dive Rescue & Recovery Team, said they were dispatched to the quarry, arriving at 2 p.m. for a rescue. Fourteen members of the dive team responded. Keystone Water Rescue, Boyertown, Mount Pleasant Dive Team and the Muhlenberg Township Fire Department were also on scene. The fire department had command, Trout said.

“He had tried to elude police by swimming into the quarry,” Trout said.

The search continued to 6 p.m. when weather conditions and darkness prohibited it. Trout said seven members of the Schuylkill Haven Dive team went out Saturday along with the others when the victim was found. Trout was among those who pulled his body from the water. He said Fontanez-Rodriguez had cuts consistent with climbing over the fence. Trout said it is difficult when the person isn’t found alive, but the dive team does what it can to achieve a successful outcome.
