Murder charges follow Monroe shooting incidents

Pocono Mountain Regional Police have arrested five people, including a 15-year-old boy, all from Tobyhanna, with numerous charges, including attempted murder, in connection with a series of shooting incidents that happened Monday between 5 and 6 p.m. in the Tobyhanna-Coolbaugh Township and A Pocono Country Place and Pocono Farms East developments in Monroe County.

Laron Watson, Solidin Hamilton, Aja’nay Watson, Jahlayah Blondell and the juvenile have been charged, according to Monroe County First Assistant District Attorney Michael Mancuso.

Laron Watson and Hamilton are facing several counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and firing a weapon into a residence. Aja’nay Watson is facing a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Blondell is charged with hindering an apprehension, and the juvenile, who police said will be tried as an adult, is charged with two counts of attempted homicide and related offenses.

Police said the incident began at 5:05 p.m. as an apparent road rage incident, escalating to the point that occupants of the two vehicles were shooting at each other, and later involved gunfire in A Pocono Country Place and Pocono Farms East developments.

Police said the incident began as two vehicles were exiting A Pocono Country Place development onto Route 196.

They said after a dark-colored Volvo cut off another vehicle as it was turning onto Route 196, the occupants of the Volvo opened fire on the other vehicle, a black Mercedes.

During the course of a back-and-forth chase, the occupants of the Mercedes were able to arm themselves and returned fire at the Volvo, police said.

Police said while responding to the above incident in the area of the Tobyhanna Shopping Center, they heard another series of gunshots coming from within A Pocono Country Place. Upon investigating that shooting, police learned a woman and her son had been struck by gunfire in their home. Officers said the woman was shot in her back and her son was struck in the arm. Both were transported to Lehigh Valley Pocono for treatment.

Police said video surveillance showed two men, one armed with a rifle and the other a handgun, forced their way into the driveway and opened fire into the home with several rounds. Police said a dark Volvo sedan was identified in the surveillance.

Meanwhile, while this scene was being investigated, officers received a call at about 5:30 that a male was struck in the head by gunfire in the area of Tobyhanna Shopping Center. He was located in a white BMW that was occupied by three females, Jahlayah Blondell, Aja’nay Watson and another female.

The three females said they found the victim on Route 196 with the head injury but did not know him nor what had happened to him and that they were just trying to help him and get him to a hospital before calling 911 themselves.

Police said the victim was transported to Lehigh Valley Pocono by emergency medical professionals with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the shooting in Pocono Farms East was reported at 5:56, resulting in a man sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg. Police said he went to the residence in the development to buy marijuana.
