Jim Thorpe fills vacant council seat

A familiar face is back on Jim Thorpe Borough Council.

Jay Miller, who has had multiple stints on council, will add what he said will only be another year with the governing body after being appointed to a vacant seat Thursday night by a 4-1 vote. One of eight applicants for the position, Miller will finish the term of Edith Lukasevich, who resigned in December.

“I’m happy to serve for the one year remaining in the term, and that’s all I’m going to do,” Miller said after the meeting. “I won’t be running for election or anything like that. I’ll do it like I’ve always done it for about 30 years now.”

Voting for Miller were council members Greg Strubinger, Mike Yeastedt, Joanne Klitsch and Thomas Highland. Robert Schaninger cast the lone opposing vote. Kyle Sheckler was absent.

Though eight candidates applied for the opening, the list was pared down to six after it was determined two individuals did not have their primary residence in the borough.

“We want to thank everyone who expressed interest,” Strubinger, council president, said. “We’re very regretful Edith has decided to step down. We once again thank her for her service and the many efforts she was involved in in the borough.”

Strubinger said he will get reconfigured committee assignments out as soon as possible.

Miller was most recently elected to council in the 2015 general election and served as vice president during his term. He lost a re-election bid in 2019.

In other personnel action Thursday night, council reappointed Vince Yaich Sr. as fire chief of the Jim Thorpe Municipal Fire Department and William Diehm as assistant chief.

Jay Miller, left, is sworn in Thursday by Mayor Michael Sofranko after Jim Thorpe Borough Council appointed him to fill the seat vacated by Edith Lukasevich in December. Miller will serve the remaining year left on Lukasevich's term and said he does not plan to seek re-election. JARRAD HEDES/TIMES NEWS
