Weissport OKs snow removal ordinance

On Monday the Weissport Borough Council held a meeting at the borough office to primarily discuss and approve the regulations of a new ordinance regarding snow removal.

The new ordinance states that when the borough experiences snowfall of 4 or more inches, residents will be required to park on the odd numbered side of the road on odd numbered days and the even numbered side of the road on even numbered days. This rule is applicable from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., the period in which snow removal takes place.

Council President Arland Moyer Sr. noted that failure of residents to park their cars on the correct side of the road would result in fines.

“For the people that don’t move there are now fines that can be levied against them. The first offense would be $25, a second offense would be $50 and a third offense would be $100.”

Moyer also added that late fees would be charged as well upon failure to pay initial fines.

“For the first fine of $25 if it isn’t paid within 48 hours it goes to $30, a $50 fine not paid within 48 hours goes to $55 and a third fine of $100 if not paid within 48 hours goes to $110.”

Failure to pay any of these fines within 10 days of being issued will result in residents receiving a notice of violation and a citation considered a summary offense. Upon conviction, violators could pay a fine ranging from $100 to $300.

A motion to approve the ordinance was made by Thomas Ketchledge and seconded by Linda Schoenberger, who attended the meeting via phone call. The motion was then passed unanimously by a voice vote by the council.

Solicitor Greg Mousseau said the ordinance is estimated to go into effect during the second week of February.
