St. Luke’s employees receive sweet treats

Life just got a little bit sweeter for employees at St. Luke’s Hospital.

They can thank the Lehighton Main Street Steering Committee for the pleasantries.

The group recently handed out 125 “sweet treat” bags of candy at St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus, as well as the nursing home.

It was a gesture meant to express gratitude to the health care workers, according to committee member Mark Hoffman.

“The purpose of the gathering was to provide employees of the hospital with a token of appreciation from the community for the efforts the employees of the hospital have all been putting in to make sure those residents of our communities requiring care during the COVID-19 pandemic were given the best care possible,” Hoffman said. “The committee members put their heads together and came up with an idea to give back to the health care workers who worked so hard during this pandemic.”

Hoffman said the individually wrapped bags of candy were obtained from Jenny’s Sweets and More, and noted the money to fund the “sweet treat” bags came from two committee members’ Thrivent Financial Action teams gift cards.

“Thrivent Financial is a very giving charitable organization that encourages its members to do charity or good deeds that help others and their community,” he said. “The committee realizes that this is just a small token of appreciation, however, the hope is that it symbolizes the “sweet” future that is ahead for all of us.”

Hoffman said the committee had a lot of momentum behind them early in 2020 with its membership and involvement growing monthly.

“Along with the growing membership, many ideas and plans were also being made in support of making Lehighton’s Downtown district a vibrant business area and destination for our residents to enjoy,” he said. “Lehighton is fortunate to have many assets such as the D&L trail, access to major highways, unique shops and businesses, and a beautiful downtown park that includes an amphitheater.”
