New police contract comes with raises

Palmerton Police Department has received a new three-year contract with raises in the second and third year.

On a unanimous measure, borough council at a special meeting on Wednesday approved the new contract between the Palmerton Police Benevolent Association and the borough.

The contract runs from Jan. 1, 2021 through Dec. 31, 2023.

It calls for a 0% increase in 2021; 4% increase in 2022, and 4.5% increase in 2023.

Borough manager Donna McGarry said the police department’s current contract was set to expire Dec. 31.

Additionally, police agreed to an increase to their medical insurance deductible from $250 to $500 in the third year of the contract.

Also, police agreed to a change in the wording of the contract for part-time patrol officers.

“We appreciate the air of good faith bargaining with the police representatives during the contract negotiation discussions,” McGarry said.

Finally, there was a question as to whether there was wording in the new contract for police equipment, to which it was stated it’s the same wording that was in the contract that just ended.
